How to choose and install Minecraft mods

A mod can change gameplay, improve performance or add new blocks and systems. Start by choosing the exact Minecraft version, then select the loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or another supported platform. The loader name and game version must match the downloaded file.

Read the dependency list. A mod may need a library such as Fabric API, and a client-only mod may not belong on a dedicated server. Install the required loader before adding the matching mod files to the installation’s mods folder.

Test a small group of mods first. If the game fails to start, use the error log to identify a missing dependency or incompatible version. Keep a copy of the working configuration and your worlds before adding more mods.
